Our client is a well-established civil contractor delivering infrastructure projects across the Waikato region.
With a strong reputation for quality, innovation, and sustainable growth, they are continuing to build their pre-construction capability and are now seeking an experienced Estimator to join their Hamilton team.
The Role
The Estimator will play a critical role in securing profitable civil infrastructure projects by providing estimating, measurement, contractual, and financial expertise. You will be responsible for managing the full tender process, engaging supply chain partners, and supporting the business to win work at sustainable margins.
This position requires strong commercial acumen, first-principles pricing capability, and the ability to collaborate closely with operational teams to develop competitive and well-structured tenders.
Responsibilities
- Develop and manage project schedules, ensuring the efficient allocation of resources, materials, and labour.
- Manage tender processes in accordance with company procedures, including leading kick-off, methodology, and final review meetings
- Review bid documentation and provide clear feedback to internal stakeholders
- Prepare accurate first-principles estimates and complete detailed quantity take-offs
- Develop methodologies, programmes, risk registers, and cashflow forecasts for submissions
- Conduct detailed tender handovers to operational teams
- Participate in post-tender debriefs and continuous improvement initiatives
- Assist with pricing variations as required
Skills And Experience
- Minimum 5 years’ civil engineering/estimating experience
- Strong understanding of NZS 3910, 3915, Conditions of Contract, and the Construction Contracts Act
- Proven ability to price work on a first-principles basis
- Experience completing detailed quantity take-offs
- Proficient in estimating and commercial management software (Candy and/or Jobpac preferred)
- Ability to lead tender reviews and manage tender handovers
- Strong negotiation and supplier engagement skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to meet deadlines and perform under pressure
- Strong commercial awareness with a focus on sustainable margins
